Vernacular, in the Contemporary: Part 1

Jackfruit Research and Design, an arts consultancy based in Bangalore, led by Annapurna Garimella curated this exhibition of works from the Lekha and Anupam Poddar collection as well as newly commissioned works by artists who are often categorized as makers of folk, tribal and traditional art. The exhibition focuses on the vernacular and shifts the art historical and institutional terms for understanding and theorizing this cluster of visual art. Moreover, the show foregrounds the diversity and contemporary relevance of vernacular artists’ personas, ideas and concerns through ambitious projects.
